Valentina Kuryliw is the Director of Education of the Holodomor Research and Education Consortium (HREC), at the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies, University of Alberta.
HREC Education (HREC ED) furthers the research, study and teaching of the Holodomor, the 1932-33 famine-genocide in Soviet Ukraine, through six streams: resource development, educator training workshops, presentations, outreach, promotion and consulting.
HREC Education promotes the inclusion of the Holodomor, a genocide recognized by the Canadian government, in curricula and at educational institutions through a multidisciplinary approach that encourages the development of critical and historical thinking skills. HREC ED develops instructional materials and trains educators across Canada, the USA and in Ukraine in best practices for teaching the Holodomor.
HREC Education conducts professional master classes for educators and gives community presentations. HREC ED consults with Ministries of Education, administrators, boards of education, history and social studies curriculum leaders and museum educators on human rights, genocide and the Holodomor.
HREC Education co-directs & funds an education Methodology Lab with HREC In Ukraine & the Ministry of Education of Ukraine.
