British Columbia

The British Columbia (BC) curriculum is now concept-based and takes a competency-driven approach to learning. There are several opportunities currently for teachers to include learning about the Holodomor in it. Examples may include: in Grade 6 when students learn about ‘regional and international conflicts’, and again in Social Studies 10 (prior to the new learning standard on Holocaust and genocide) with the examination of ‘international conflicts and co-operations’ and/ or ‘discriminatory policies and injustices in Canada and the world’ (such as national/ ethnic discrimination and political discrimination/ persecution).

Also, the Holodomor is a suggested topic of study that can be found in Genocide Studies 12 when students learn about ‘acts of mass violence and atrocities in different global regions’, and/or can be included in the elective course 20th Century World History 12 when students study ‘authoritarian regimes as well as religious, ethnic’, and/or ‘cultural conflicts, including genocide’ learning standards.
